I Love Punany – Tassili’s Raw Reality

At any given day, you can walk into Tassili’s Raw Reality and find people from different walks of life waiting in line to be served. Located in the Historic West End area of Atlanta, Tassili’s Raw Reality is a raw vegan restaurant that serves an array of wraps, salads and other delectables — all 100% VEGAN. Now, for my brothers and sisters scrunching your face up in disgust at the words raw and vegan, please bear with me for a while. Everyone that knows me knows that I love to eat and I’ll try just about anything. When my mom, who is currently a baby vegan, suggested that I try a Punany wrap, I had some questions. What’s in it? Why is it called a Punany wrap? Where do you even find a wrap with such a bold name? Instead of answering my questions, she simply took me to Tassili’s.

Upon entering the restaurant, I was enticed by the beautiful artwork by local artists, that adorned the bright multi colored walls. This was the dinning area. Small, but intimate. The vibes in here were of positive energy, peace and love. As I walked further into the building, I was met with a line of people waiting to be served. Sitting on a shelf across from the wrap station, there was an assortment of sweets & snacks — from chocolate chip cookies, to brownies to popcorn, all 100% vegan. In front of me stood a fridge cooler. One side held an array of drinks and the other side held deserts such as Afrikan Carob cake and creme pies.

Before I knew it, it was my turn to order. They make the wraps right in front of you, like a sub shop. I ordered the famous Punani wrap. It’s a whole wheat wrap, with a thin layer of soy mayonnaise, kale salad, couscous, sweet coconut corn, and tomato and avocado slices.


First off let me note, my wrap was a 50/50 mix of a regular kale & spicy kale. I couldn’t believe I was eating kale and loving it! The kale salad is a mix of kale, chopped red onions, sundried tomatoes & spices — and these are just the flavors I can detect — all tossed in some kind of sauce. Even though I got a 50/50 mix of kale, it was still spicy. I can definitely picture myself eating this by itself on my next visit.

The star of this show is most definitely the corn. The sweetness of the coconut milk (which the corn is soaked in) offsets the spices coming from the kale very nicely. The couscous, which to me tastes like brown rice in little balls, adds a different texture to the wrap. It also soaks up the coconut milk from the corn. A perfect sweet and spicy mix.

Heads up, there is a lot of kale packed into this wrap, so you’ll be chewing quite a bit. However, this allows you more time to explore and savor the flavors the infamous Punany wrap has to offer.

I could not imagine myself eating raw vegan food before this experience, but I will be a loyal customer to Tassili’s Raw Reailty for a long time to come. And after reading this review — yes, I’m talking to you scrunch face — you can’t tell me you’re not at least curious.

The Corner GRILLE (pt. 2) – Historic College Park, GA

The Lemon Pepper Chicken and Broccoli dinner was served with your choice of wild rice or garlic mashed potatoes and a side of lemon caper butter cream sauce. Wild rice, to me is easy to mess up. Like brown rice, once you over cook it, it’s over with. I wished it was seasoned a tad bit more, however, I was pleasantly surprised to find it soft, not hard.

Sitting atop of the wild rice was a large chicken breast. Right away, I knew the flavor from the chicken was going to be explosive, due to the way the seasoning was evenly dispersed along the breast. Since I ordered this to go, I only had the plastic utensils I was given. The chicken was tender enough that the plastic knife sliced the breast with ease. And the flavor — oh my goodness — the Corner Grille did not disappoint. As I bit into it, the lemony juices from the chicken spilled out into my mouth — letting me know the lemon pepper flavor was cooked throughout breast and not simply on top of the breast.

Off to the side of the to-go box was 4 pieces of freshly steamed broccoli, moderately seasoned with salt & pepper. Although just as good spread over the chicken, I used the lemon caper butter cream sauce to dip my broccoli in. I know this totally defeats the health purpose of having fresh veggies, but oooohhhhh so worth it! The cream sauce was whipped and fluffy making it perfect for dipping — the broccoli did not get drenched in the sauce, but rather lightly frosted with the lemon-garlicy flavor of the butter cream sauce.

Although small in location size, Corner Grille makes up for it with their flavor packed dishes. This summer, they’ve started renovations to give patrons more space. The restaurant is scheduled to open August 16, 2017. In the meantime, people are able to order dishes via their To-Go window located on the rear/side of the building.

After each review, I like to give the meal a numerical rating (1-5) based on taste, appearance and portion size. I’ll also give you a price range of how expensive the meal is (one dollar sign is least expensive and four is most expensive). Below are the ratings for both the Salmon Club & Lemon Pepper Chicken meal.

Salmon Club

  • Taste: 4/5 — bacon was a little flappy
  • Appearance: 5/5 — not sloppy or falling apart. Neat presentation
  • Portion Size: 5/5 — $12 for a sandwich may seem a little pricey but you are definitely getting your money’s worth with this meal

Lemon Pepper Chicken

  • Taste: 4/5 — wild rice could’ve used more seasoning
  • Appearance: 5/5 — very neat

The Corner GRILLE (pt. 1) – Historic College Park, GA

Located minutes from Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, the downtown Historic College Park area is home to an array of salons, stores and restaurants, each catering to different tastes. Seated on the corner of Main Street is a small restaurant appropriately called the Corner GRILLE. I work right above the restaurant and I frequently visit for lunch because their food is that good!

I usually call my order in 15 minutes before I take my lunch. On this particular day I wanted lunch and dinner, so I ordered the Salmon Club and the Lemon Pepper Chicken dinner. Upon entering the small establishment, I was warmly welcomed by a hostess and slapped in the face by the cajun-infused smells wafting from the kitchen. After telling the hostess I ordered out, I was shown to the bar to await my order.

The Salmon Club is served on toasted French bread. For all of you that are not foodies and do not know what French bread may taste like (or you do and might not know it), I want you to think of the bread that’s served with spaghetti. Although you’re most likely going to get served Italian bread with spaghetti — because spaghetti is an Italian dish — the taste is sort of similar to the Italian ciabatta bread. It’s floury and crunchy on the outside, but it’s not as soft & moist on the interior as ciabatta bread.

I ordered my salmon well done. I was very pleased that The Corner Grille understood the difference between well done & dried out. My salmon was fresh, tender and juicy. It was also seasoned well. The salmon was not bland, but the Cajun seasoning & black pepper didn’t overpower it either. A top of the salmon patty were two thick pieces of bacon with a smoky flavor. The spinach and tomato that topped the bacon were fresh and evenly proportioned (the veggies didn’t overpower the sandwich).

The star of this show was the spicy mayo. A thin layer is spread on each slice of bread (this was a bonus for me because you got to taste it on the salmon on one slice & the veggies on the other slice). It tied all of the rest of the flavors from the sandwich together perfectly. The spice level is low and subtle, just enough to give the sandwich a little extra kick. The mayo also served as a dipping sauce for my seasoned shoe string fries that came along with the sandwich.
